The story of Lifekind is a very personal one for us. In the 1990s, Walt found himself dealing with a multitude of health challenges that were ultimately traced back to a variety of chemical exposures. Carol had been an allergy sufferer since childhood, and had avoided mainstream products for most of her adult life.

When we made the connection between chemical exposure and our sensitivities, reducing our daily exposure to toxic substances became a driving desire. It is what motivated us to get serious about finding products made with more natural ingredients.

In 1998, we created the Lifekind catalog as a way to offer the products we were using in our own lives to others looking to lessen their chemical exposure. It also provided a way to share some of the shocking information we were uncovering about common ways in which we are all exposed to chemicals on a daily basis.

As Lifekind evolved, this quest became the foundation of our Mission Statement:

We are dedicated to promoting products that lower your daily exposure to hazardous chemical ingredients, and to helping you identify those ingredients which are potential health risks to you, your family, and our planet.

In the infancy of our catalog, we realized the importance of the bedroom environment - the location in which we spend a third of our lives. It wasn't long before we realized that our product offerings would focus on items for the bedroom and bath.

Ultimately we decided to manufacture mattresses and bedding that offered the unprecedented combination of organic purity and comfort. In 2003, we founded Organic Mattresses, Inc., which has become the largest seller of American-made (and sourced) organic mattresses in the United States. Walt's continuing passion for research resulted in the publishing of his book, Toxic Bedrooms: Your Guide to a Safe Night's Sleep, by Freedom Press in 2006.

Our goal has always been to be the most trusted name in the industry, and our third-party certifications of purity are proof that we have achieved that goal. In our commitment to making and selling only organic products, we have created an earth-friendly line with no compromises. With our membership in the Organic Trade Association and other like-minded organizations, we continue to support what others are doing to make the world a healthier place for us all.
