Lifekind Customizable Wool-Wrapped Natural Shredded Rubber Pillow

Hands down, the Customizable Wool-wrapped Natural Shredded Rubber Pillow is our bestselling pillow. It combines the best qualities of natural rubber and wool, creating a divinely comfortable pillow with medium support. The pillow’s zippered closure makes it possible to remove some of the rubber to customize it to your best comfort level. Made from natural rubber latex, with Naturally Safer® pure wool in the outer chamber. Handmade in the USA.

Like our natural rubber mattresses, the natural rubber used in our pillows comes from the sap of the rubber tree and does not contain synthetic rubber, often referred to as “latex” or “styrene-butadiene rubber” (SBR).

Summer Brings out the Bugs – How to Protect your Organic Pillow from Bed Bugs

BUGS!     Bed_Bug

Summer brings them out, and we keep them out of our organic pillows with our Certified Organic Dust-Mite and Bed-Bug Barrier PILLOW COVERS.

Lifekind Organic Pillow Barrier Cover
We guarantee that our certified organic barrier covers will keep dust mites allergens and bed bugs out of your pillows, unless they’re already there, 🙁 in which case the barrier cover will cut off the dust mites’ food supply (flakes of your skin).  Without  food, the dust mites will starve and die.  The barrier cover will keep bed bugs out of your pillow, but if they are already there then it is time to get new bedding.

As an added bonus, barrier covers keep your organic pillow in pristine condition.  Which is great, because our organic pillows can’t be washed.

Use one of our certified organic barrier covers on a new organic pillow and it will protect it for its entire product life.

How to Choose the Perfect Pillow

You may be thinking….that’s easy, you go down to the bed and bath store and pull a few off the shelf and squish, press, lay your head on them and whichever feels good and is within your budget will be fine (trial and error, I guess?). Or maybe you’re replacing your old pillows with cruelty-free, organic alternatives, but don’t know where to begin.

Everybody is unique, so there is no one “perfect” pillow for everyone. It’s just not that simple. Deciphering the “pillow puzzle” might have you throwing in the towel and settling for anything soft-ish to prop your head up on. Read on for advice on how to best match your comfort needs to various types of pillows.

Sad man holding pillow

I believe the first thing to consider when purchasing anything really, is what it is made of. Since about 1/3 of your time is spent in bed and pillows are right in your face, I wouldn’t recommend petroleum-based poly-fill or memory foam, which is found to contain 60+ toxic VOCs (volatile organic compounds). The healthiest choice is always organic.

Next, consider your sleeping position(s) and the pillow loft (or height) needed:

  • Side sleepers: Choose a pillow that is the proper loft, so your head and neck are supported in a neutral position. For example, if the pillow is for a child, you may need a light-loft pillow. If it’s for a person with broad shoulders you may need a full-loft pillow, and medium- and full-loft pillows are generally best for the average-sized person.
  • Back sleepers: A puffy, light- to medium-loft pillow is usually best, to gently lift your head without putting too much pressure on your neck.
  • Belly sleepers: Try a light-loft pillow, or none at all, so your head isn’t too high.

Now for the fun part. What a pillow is stuffed with greatly determines how it feels. If you answer yes to any of the following questions, click on the links to the organic pillows after the question, and that pillow could be the best one for you.

If you’re still unsure, just call and talk to one of our knowledgable pillow experts at Lifekind at 1-800-284-4983. I love getting calls about pillows, because I enjoy using adjectives like “puffy,” “shmooshable,” “buoyant,” and “moldable.”

The Down Pillow Lover’s Cruelty-Free Alternatives

If you love down pillows and are looking for a cruelty-free organic option, or want to get away from the allergens caused by the dust mites that like to cozy up in down, look no further.

Lifekind carries two pillows that possess the qualities of down pillows, but are more breathable and better for temperature regulation. The Natural Rubber Molded Pillow and the Wool Wrapped Shredded Rubber Pillow are made of pure, natural-rubber latex, which repels dust mites naturally. The wool in the Shredded Rubber Pillow also repels dust mites. You can decide on your own which one is right for you, or if you’re still unsure, call and talk to a Lifekind Product Specialist at 800-284-4983.

The Natural Rubber Molded Pillow

  • Our softest-feeling pillow
  • Supportive softness elevates the head without pressure
  • Light, buoyant, flexible and squish-able
  • Molded rubber bounces back to pillow shape, softly

The Wool-Wrapped Shredded Rubber Pillow

  • Filled with small pieces of fluffy natural rubber inside an outer chamber of wool
  • Can be customized by removing some fill; the more you remove, the fluffier it is, like a down pillow
  • More fill has a “feather pillow” feel and is heavier
  • Can be fluffed, shaped, and “smooshed” like a down pillow

The Shredded-Rubber Pillow (and Why I Love It)

On October 9, I celebrated my tenth anniversary at Lifekind. During that time I’ve had the opportunity to try pretty much everything we sell, and year after year one product remains my absolute favorite: The Wool-Wrapped Shredded-Rubber Pillow.
Why am I so enthusiastic?
Customizable Wool-Wrapped Natural Shredded Rubber Pillow

I love the feel. With tiny pieces of natural rubber inside a zippered chamber and a separate outside chamber filled with wool, the overall feel is one of substance and buoyancy. It has some of the softness and “poufiness” of a down pillow, but it’s firmer and heavier — it can be “shaped” like a down pillow by holding up one end and letting the filling fall to the other, and my neck appreciates it. The inside chamber holding the natural rubber can be zipped open and some of the rubber taken out (or more put in) to make it just the right height. I take it everywhere I go, from hotels to friends’ houses to tent camping in Yosemite. If I’m using any other pillow, my sleep won’t be as good. It’s a little bit of home to take with me on the road.

It smells great. The smell of natural rubber represents health, comfort, purity, and happiness for me. It makes me  calmer and makes it easier to fall asleep, and if I wake up during the night it’s easier to go back to sleep. Natural aromatherapy!
It lasts forever — well, not quite. But a long time. I’ve had mine for about six years, and it shows no sign of slowing down. When it does, I’ll buy another one immediately. No other pillow will ever be able to take its place.

Dad’s Tofu Tacos

Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have parents who not only believed in an organic and holistic lifestyle, but lived one as well. My sister and I grew up without jarred baby food or baby formula. My parents would use a hand grinder wherever they went, and we would eat straight from their plates. Goat’s milk and kefir were staples, as well as tofu and homemade bread. My parents shopped for organic produce at the local co-op or grew it themselves. We hand-raised pigs, and bought a steer from a local farmer each year. It was a healthy, sustainable childhood.

My upbringing taught me to believe in a natural and organic lifestyle. I eat organically, use natural remedies, and always recycle. One area I never thought about until I started working at Lifekind, however, was my bedroom. I never knew the potential hazards of something so seemingly trustworthy as a mattress. I’ve learned so much at Lifekind, and have unearthed a new dimension in my strive for purity.

My goal is to have an organic mattress made without chemicals as soon as possible, but in the meantime I’ll work my way up through pillows and mattress toppers till the money tree can shake a branch free. This in turn has prompted me to start trying harder in the areas of my life I already consider to be organic, and where better to start then to re-create some of my parents’ dinnertime dishes from when I was growing up?

One of my father’s most notorious and loved dinner recipes is for Tofu Tacos. Not only is it a great option for vegetarians (a.k.a. my sister Ashley), but it’s also a much leaner choice than typical beef tacos. Hopefully sharing this recipe will show how easy it is to make a small change to a healthier lifestyle.

Ingredients:
1 or 2 packages of firm tofu (I like to use two for leftover taco salad)
1 small yellow onion
Salt and pepper
Chili powder
Garlic powder
Paprika
Grated Pepper jack and/or cheddar cheese
Sliced olives
Chopped tomatoes
Cilantro
Chopped lettuce (Romaine is best)
Avocado
Sour cream
Corn tortillas

Drain tofu and squeeze out excess moisture, then chop into roughly 1/4-inch squares. Coat a large non-stick skillet with olive oil and turn the heat to med-high; add tofu. Meanwhile, dice the onion and add it to the tofu. Once the tofu begins to brown, you can add the seasoning: a healthy dose of garlic powder and chili powder, then a lighter dusting of paprika. Add salt and pepper to taste. Turn down the heat and continue cooking until the tofu is crispy on the outside.

While the tofu and onions are cooking, prep the rest of the fixings: Chop the lettuce, dice the tomatoes, pick the cilantro leaves, peel and slice the avocado, drain the olives, and grate the cheese. Fill a small skillet with about ½” of vegetable oil; turn to med-high heat until the oil is hot. Place corn tortillas one at a time in the oil for 10-15 seconds, then using tongs, fold in half into a taco shape. Cook on each side about 30 seconds, or until the shell turns golden brown, and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain.

For extra “yum” factor, dust the tortilla shells with parmesan cheese while they’re still hot. Build your taco with all the fixings you prefer, and you’ll have Dad’s Tofu Tacos.

Enjoy!
