  • Choice of 5” or 7” depths

  • Our Maton® has been designed with a 2" certified organic natural rubber latex core (like a mattress) and then layered with soft padding of GOTS-certified organic cotton and GOTS-certified organic wool (like a futon), hence the word Maton®

  • Certified organic wool is added under the surface to increase cushioning and facilitate comfortable body temperature

  • The 5" version makes a perfect child's transition mattress from a crib. Choose the 7" version for adults or when using with a folding sofa frame or organic futon couch

  • Like all futon products, the Maton® will show a body impression, which occurs naturally as the thick padding layers mold to the body’s contours

  • Should be turned and fluffed to minimize the "body signature," but the natural rubber core will provide lasting resilience for the life of the product

  • Meets the GREENGUARD® product emission standard for a safe and comfortable sleep environment

  • Handmade in the USA

  • 10-Year Limited Warranty

Matons® require a doctor's prescription because we use no chemical fire retardants. Give us a call at 1-800-284-4983 to place your order.

Shipping charges are based on level of service and location. We will call with a quote before your order is processed.

Why do I need a doctor's prescription for my Maton®?

The Maton®  does not contain enough wool to meet federal fire codes. Federal law states that in order to purchase a non-fire-retardant mattress, a doctor's prescription is required.
Any licensed medical doctor (MD) or osteopath (DO) may provide this simple prescription, which should state "patient requires bed made without chemical flame retardants."
We agree that the step of getting a doctor's permission to protect ourselves and our children from toxic chemicals seems ridiculous, but we must follow the law. Before we can process your Maton® order, you must send us the Rx by fax (530-477-5399) or e-mail to sales@lifekind.com. Please be sure your name is shown clearly on the prescription.
Please note that you do not need to obtain a doctor's prescription to purchase other Lifekind mattresses, since they meet all U.S. and state fire regulations using our naturally safer wool.

Maton Care:

Will your Maton® show body impressions? Yes. The certified organic fillings are not immune to the forces of gravity (and the bed probably wouldn’t be too comfortable if they were). Generally, cotton will compress about 50%, and wool will crush about 33%, under the weight of an average sleeper.

Your Maton should be turned and fluffed, and you can depend on the 2” certified organic natural rubber core to provide lasting resilience for the life of the product. Follow the simple procedures below:

  • Any mattress or Maton must have air circulation around it to prevent mold. When our products are placed on a solid-platform bed frame or on the floor, proper air circulation cannot occur, and they become prone to mold.

  • Every few weeks or so, turn your Maton over and fluff it by patting it with your open palm. When turning the Maton, also alternate direction so that the wear is evenly distributed.

  • To protect the surface from soiling and stains, we recommend covering your Maton with our organic Flannel Mattress Pad. Use a nontoxic spot cleaner if necessary.

  • Air your Matonas often as you can. Airing in the sunshine helps to remove odors and any residual moisture.

  • Always handle your Maton carefully. Ideally, two people should be used to turn king or queen sizes. However, Matons can be rolled and pushed like a roll of carpet for easier handling.

Does virtually any futon frame work for the Maton? Does a queen size mattress fit well folded within a futon frame? Thank you.

  • Hi Hillary -- you can use any standard-sized futon frame for our Maton, and the queen size is completely standard (and folds very well).

Why don't you just add enough wool to the Maton so that it meets Federal fire codes?

  • The wool in the Maton is simply in layers under the (not quilted) cotton cover. The compressed wool in the quilted cover is what creates our natural fire retardant in the other mattresses.
